TRICKSTER TIMES NEWSPAPER
Worked With: Native Movement
About Project: Raven, often referred to as a trickster, is an honored member of many traditional stories across Alaska Native, Inuit and Yuit cultures. Raven brings about transformation and illumination. The mission of the Trickster Times is to bring light to a world more closely rooted in Alaska Native traditional stories of creation, mischief and abundance for all. The alliteration of Trickster Times nods to the Tundra Times, a news publication that centered voices of Alaska Natives from 1962 - 1997. The Tundra Times reported on events that transformed the realities of Alaska Natives, including the advocation of settling land claims, founding of Native corporations, and the transfer of health and social services to Native-operated nonprofits.
Project Goal: To create a digital version and printed version of the 2022 Trickster Times that would be shared online and handed out at the 2022 Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Annual Convention.
Assets: Digital Files (InDesign), Printed Newspaper
HERRING PROTECTORS ZINE
Worked With: Native Movement, Herring Protectors
About Project: The Herring Protectors is a grassroots movement led by Indigenous women that use the original teachings of the Kiks.ádi women — ceremony and collective organizing — to stand up to unjust legacies of colonization and genocide that have led to the devastation of the yaaw (herring).
Project Goal: Create a zine like booklet that summarizes the work of the Herring protectors. The booklet would be shared at the 2023 Yaaw Ḵoo.éex’ (Herring Ceremony) in Sheet'ká Ḵwáan (Sitka, AK)
